Flat-Pack Furniture, Fully Assembled

Furniture assembly is one of those jobs that looks simple on the box and turns into a two-hour ordeal on the floor. The Local Handyman LLC has been handling flat-pack and ready-to-assemble furniture for homeowners across the northwest suburbs since 2016. One call to (773) 444-7153 and we'll have your bedroom set, home office desk, wardrobe, or entertainment unit put together correctly, without the stripped screws and misaligned doors that come from rushing it yourself.

The cost of furniture assembly depends on the number of pieces, the complexity of the unit, and whether the packaging has already been opened and parts sorted. A single bookshelf is a quick job. A full bedroom set with a platform bed, two nightstands, and a dresser takes longer. We won't give you a flat rate over the internet because a six-drawer dresser from IKEA and a six-drawer dresser from a specialty retailer are genuinely different jobs. Every job is different, contact The Local Handyman LLC for an accurate estimate.

What We Assemble

If it shipped in a flat box with a parts sheet, we can put it together.

01

Bedroom Furniture

Bed frames, platform beds, dressers, armoires, and nightstands. We make sure drawers slide, doors align, and the frame won't wobble the first time someone sits on it.

02

Home Office

Standing desks, L-shaped workstations, filing cabinets, bookshelves, and hutch units. Getting the cable management right from the start saves a headache later.

03

Living Room

TV stands, entertainment centers, sectional sofas, coffee tables, and shelving units. We read the manual so you don't have to find out on page 14 that step 3 was wrong.

04

Kids' Furniture

Bunk beds, loft beds, toy storage, and study desks. Kids' furniture gets climbed on. Every bolt gets checked twice before we leave.

05

Storage and Garage

Utility shelving, garage cabinets, closet systems, and wardrobe units. Heavy-duty shelving needs to be anchored to the wall correctly, not just stacked.

06

Flat-Pack from Any Retailer

IKEA, Wayfair, Amazon, Target, Costco, Ashley, West Elm. If it came with an allen key and a parts diagram, we've seen something like it.

How It Works

Three Steps from Box to Done

  1. 01

    Call and Describe the Job

Tell us what you bought, how many pieces, and whether the boxes are open. We'll schedule a time that works and give you a straight answer on what to expect.

  2. 02

We Show Up with the Right Tools

We bring electric drivers, levels, and everything else the job needs. You don't have to dig through a junk drawer looking for the right bit.

  3. 03

We Assemble, Check, and Clean Up

Every joint gets tightened, every door gets tested, and we break down the cardboard and bag the packaging before we leave. Your job is to decide where things go.

What Good Assembly Actually Looks Like

bedroom furniture work, professional service in Schaumburg, IL
Flat-pack instructions are written to the minimum standard. They'll tell you what order to drive the screws, but they won't tell you to check whether the cam locks are fully seated before you stand the unit up, or that the back panel needs to go in before the third shelf, not after. We've assembled enough of these to know where the traps are. We also won't overtighten cam locks into particle board and strip them out. That's the move that turns a solid piece of furniture into something that'll wobble apart in six months. If we spot a defective part, we tell you before we keep going, not after everything's built around it. Need a piece wall-mounted or anchored for safety? We handle that too. Tall bookshelves and wardrobes should be anchored, especially in homes with kids. That's part of the job, not an extra charge to negotiate.

When to Call Instead of DIY

Honestly, a simple two-shelf bookcase from Target? Most people can handle that. But once you're looking at a bed frame with 80-plus parts, a wardrobe with sliding doors and a mirrored panel, or anything that requires you to hold two pieces in position while driving a bolt you can barely reach, the math on doing it yourself changes fast. The same goes for furniture that arrived with a damaged part. Trying to force assembly around a warped panel or a stripped cam fitting is how a piece of furniture becomes unreturnable. We'll spot it early and tell you what your options are. We're also a natural call when you've just moved and need a whole household of flat-pack boxes dealt with in a day. Rather than spending your first week in a new place building furniture, call us and we'll knock it out. That's part of what we do across the northwest suburbs under our general home maintenance and home improvement work.

Jacob did an incredible job installing a new light fixture for us. He was communicative throughout the process and also took the time to explain some other projects he could help us with around the house. We will definitely be calling him again for our next job. Highly recommend!

We had a great experience with this handyman. He was professional, punctual, and clearly knew what he was doing. The work was completed carefully and efficiently, and he made sure everything was clean when finished. He communicated well throughout the job and charged a fair price. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for reliable home repairs or improvements.

Frequently asked questions

How much does furniture assembly cost?
It depends on the number of pieces, the complexity, and whether the packaging is already open and parts are sorted. A single small shelf is a quick job. A full bedroom set with a bed frame, dresser, and two nightstands takes considerably longer. We don't post flat rates because the same product from two different manufacturers can be a genuinely different job. Contact The Local Handyman LLC for an accurate estimate based on exactly what you bought.
Do you assemble IKEA furniture specifically?
Yes. IKEA flat-pack is some of the most commonly assembled furniture we see. The cam lock and dowel system they use is reliable when assembled correctly, but the instructions skip several steps that matter, including checking cam lock seating before standing a unit upright and sequencing the back panel correctly. We've assembled enough IKEA pieces to know where the traps are in each product line.
Can you assemble furniture that was partially started and then abandoned?
Usually, yes. We'll assess what's been done, check whether anything was forced or installed incorrectly, and either continue from where you stopped or back it up to a point where we're confident it's right. Partially assembled furniture with cam locks already over-tightened into particle board is the exception, but we'll tell you upfront what we find before we proceed.
Do you wall-anchor furniture like wardrobes and tall bookshelves?
Yes, and we recommend it for anything over five feet tall, especially in homes with children. Most flat-pack wardrobes and tall shelving units include a wall anchor bracket in the hardware bag that most people skip. We don't skip it. We locate the wall stud, anchor correctly, and make sure the unit won't tip under load.
What happens if a part is defective or missing from the box?
We stop and tell you before building around it. Continuing assembly with a warped panel or a stripped cam fitting usually makes the return or replacement harder. We'll document what we found, give you the part number from the manual, and advise on whether to contact the retailer for a replacement part or return the whole unit. We won't force a piece together and hand you a wobbly result.
Do you do furniture assembly as part of a larger move-in job?
Yes. We handle multi-room furniture assembly for homeowners who've just moved and need multiple flat-pack pieces assembled in one visit. That kind of job fits naturally alongside other home improvement projects we handle. Call us with the full list of what needs to be assembled and we'll schedule accordingly.
