Chicago Remodeling From Small Fixes to Full Rooms

Chicago homeowners searching for remodeling help want one thing above everything else: a crew that actually shows up, knows the work, and doesn't hand the job off to someone else. The Local Handyman LLC has been serving the Chicagoland area since 2016, handling everything from kitchen remodels to bathroom overhauls to custom carpentry, all under one contractor relationship. Five stars across every Google review we've received, and the work speaks for itself. Call (773) 444-7153 to talk through your project.

We're based in the northwest suburbs and run jobs throughout Chicago and the surrounding metro. If your home needs a full kitchen gut-and-rebuild, new flooring laid through two floors, or a bathroom tile job done right the first time, our crew makes the drive. We know Chicago housing stock: older greystone two-flats, bungalows with original hardwood under carpet, kitchens that haven't been touched since the 80s. That context matters when you're planning a renovation, and it's the kind of thing you only pick up by doing this work for nearly a decade.

What Chicago Homeowners Actually Remodel

The work we get called for most often tells you a lot about what Chicago homes need.

01

Kitchen Remodeling

Chicago kitchens in older homes tend to be small and closed off. We open layouts, install custom cabinetry, replace flooring, and tile backsplashes. Full gut jobs or targeted upgrades.

02

Bathroom Remodeling

Dated tile, failing grout, cramped layouts. We handle bathroom remodeling from floor to ceiling: new tile, fixtures, vanities, and all the rough work in between.

03

Flooring Replacement

Chicago bungalows and two-flats often have original hardwood buried under decades of carpet. We do flooring replacement, installation, and refinishing across all floor types.

04

Custom Carpentry

Built-ins, shelving, trim work, and custom cabinetry. Older Chicago homes have trim profiles you can't just buy off the shelf. We fabricate and match them.

05

Drywall and Repairs

Demo work always finds something. We handle drywall repair, patching, and finishing so your remodel doesn't stall waiting on another trade.

06

Plumbing Fixture Work

Faucet replacements, fixture installs, and standard plumbing repairs. We're not a plumbing company, but we handle the fixture-level work that comes up in every kitchen and bath job.

Our Process

How a Chicago Remodel Actually Gets Done

  1. 01

    Start With a Real Conversation

Call us and describe what you want. Every project begins with a consultation, not a sales pitch. We ask the right questions, look at what you've got, and tell you what's realistic.

  2. 02

    We Handle the Scope

Carpentry, tile, flooring, drywall, fixture work. We don't subcontract the parts we don't want to deal with and hand you a coordination problem. One crew, one point of contact.

  3. 03

    Clean Finish, No Surprises

We don't leave a half-finished wall and disappear. The job gets done, the space gets cleaned up, and you get the result you talked about at the start.

Chicago Housing Stock Has Its Own Challenges

Luxury bedroom and living space renovation with custom wood paneling and built-in cabinetry
Chicago homes built in the 1920s through 1960s have quirks that generic remodeling advice doesn't account for. Plaster walls instead of drywall. Non-standard stud spacing. Original cast iron drains that crack when you disturb the floor around them. Brick exteriors that make running new lines harder than it looks on a YouTube video. We've worked in enough Chicago bungalows, coach houses, and two-flats to know what's hiding behind the drywall before we open it. That matters when you're budgeting a project. A crew that's only done new construction in the suburbs will find surprises. We find them too, but we know what to do with them. If your Chicago home needs home improvement work that accounts for what the building actually is, not what a standard estimate assumes it is, that's the conversation worth having with us.

The Work We Won't Do

Honest answer: we don't do everything. We're not a licensed electrical contractor, and we won't run new circuits through your breaker panel. We're not a structural engineering firm, and we won't touch load-bearing work without the right assessment. We don't do roofing as a primary service. What we will do is tell you that upfront, before we start, not after we've pulled permits and hit a wall. A lot of homeowners have been burned by a handyman who said yes to everything and delivered a fraction of it. We'd rather tell you what's outside our scope and refer you right than overpromise and leave you with a problem. For the work we do take on, we finish it. That's not a slogan. It's just how we operate.

What Chicago Remodeling Projects Cost to Consider

  1. 01

    Scope Drives Everything

A Chicago kitchen remodel that touches only cabinets and countertops costs far less than one that moves a wall or relocates plumbing. Know your scope before you get a number.

  2. 02

Material Choices Matter More Than Labor

Custom cabinetry versus stock, hardwood versus LVP, natural stone versus porcelain tile. The material selection on a remodel often costs more than the labor. We help you make those tradeoffs clearly.

  3. 03

    Every Job Is Different

We don't publish flat rates because Chicago homes don't have flat conditions. Call (773) 444-7153 and describe your project. We'll tell you what drives the cost.

Jacob did an incredible job installing a new light fixture for us. He was communicative throughout the process and also took the time to explain some other projects he could help us with around the house. We will definitely be calling him again for our next job. Highly recommend!

We had a great experience with this handyman. He was professional, punctual, and clearly knew what he was doing. The work was completed carefully and efficiently, and he made sure everything was clean when finished. He communicated well throughout the job and charged a fair price. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for reliable home repairs or improvements.

Remodeling FAQs for Chicago Homeowners

Do you take on full kitchen remodels in Chicago, or just smaller jobs?
Both. We handle full kitchen remodels from demo through final fixtures, and we also take on targeted jobs like replacing cabinets or tiling a backsplash. Chicago kitchens vary enormously in age and condition. If you've got a 1950s kitchen with original plaster and cast iron pipes in the walls, that's a different project than a 1990s gut-rehab starter kitchen. We assess what you've actually got and scope accordingly. Call us and describe the space.
How far into Chicago do you travel for remodeling work?
We're based in the northwest suburbs and run jobs across Chicago regularly. Neighborhoods on the northwest side, north side, and areas within reasonable drive time of the suburbs are all in our territory. The honest answer is: call us with your address and we'll tell you directly. We won't string you along if the distance doesn't work.
Chicago homes often have plaster walls instead of drywall. Do you work with plaster?
Yes. Older Chicago greystone homes and bungalows built before the 1950s almost always have plaster over wood lath rather than drywall. We work with both. When a remodel requires opening plaster walls, we patch and finish to match. We don't just slap drywall over a plaster opening and call it done. If the whole wall is coming out anyway, we'll let you know when a full drywall replacement makes more sense than a patch.
Can you match original trim and millwork in older Chicago homes?
Often yes. Chicago bungalows and two-flats from the 1920s through 1940s have specific trim profiles that aren't sold at big box stores anymore. Our custom carpentry work includes fabricating and matching period trim, window casings, and door surrounds. We won't promise a perfect match on every profile without seeing the original first, but this is work we've done before and we know what's involved.
What's the most common remodeling mistake Chicago homeowners make?
Underestimating what's behind the walls. Chicago housing stock is old. When you open a kitchen or bathroom in a home built before 1970, you're likely to find original galvanized pipes, knob-and-tube wiring, or subfloor conditions that weren't in the original estimate. That's not a reason to avoid remodeling. It's a reason to hire a crew that's seen it before and knows how to handle it without blowing the whole timeline. We scope for contingencies. Most crews don't.
Do you handle flooring in Chicago homes with radiant heat under the slab?
Radiant heat systems require compatible flooring materials and careful installation. Not every flooring replacement approach works over radiant heat. LVP has thermal limits; certain hardwoods don't perform well over sustained heat. We'll ask about your heating system before recommending a product. If we're not the right fit for a specific floor-over-radiant application, we'll say so rather than install something that fails in two winters.
