What solid drywall installation actually takes

Drywall installation is one of those jobs that looks straightforward until you're hanging a 12-foot sheet on a ceiling by yourself or trying to get a seam perfectly flush on a corner that isn't quite 90 degrees. The Local Handyman LLC has been doing this work across the northwest Chicago suburbs since 2016, and we've seen what happens when it's rushed. Call us at (773) 444-7153 before the project starts, not after the tape is bubbling.

What drives the cost of a drywall installation job is mostly scope and access. A single finished room is a very different project from a basement buildout with soffits, or adding a wall to carve up an open floor plan. Sheet thickness matters too: 5/8-inch fire-rated board costs more and weighs more than standard half-inch, but some applications require it. Then there's finishing level. A level 4 or 5 finish, the kind you need before painting with a flat sheen, takes significantly more time than a level 3 that'll go behind a texture coat. We'll walk you through what your specific job actually needs. Every job is different, contact The Local Handyman LLC for an accurate estimate.

What we cover on a drywall installation job

  1. 01

    Framing and layout

We confirm stud layout and blocking are in place before a single sheet goes up. Hanging over bad framing is how you get wavy walls that show through paint.

  2. 02

    Hanging and fastening

Sheets are cut to fit, then fastened to framing with the right screw pattern. Overdriving screws pops the paper face. We don't do that.

  3. 03

    Taping and mudding

Three coats minimum on seams, feathered wide enough that no ridge shows at the joint. Rushing this stage is where most DIY jobs fall apart.

  4. 04

    Finish sanding

Final sanding before primer. The finish level we sand to depends on what paint sheen you're using. Flat paint hides more than semi-gloss does.

How We Work

Our drywall installation process

Three stages, done in order, no shortcuts between them.

  1. 01

    Measure, cut, hang

We assess the space, account for outlets, switches, and odd angles, then cut and hang sheets to the framing. Ceilings go up before walls.

  2. 02

    Tape, mud, coat

Seams get taped immediately after hanging. Then it's three rounds of joint compound, each one feathered wider than the last, with dry time between coats.

  3. 03

    Sand, prime, done

We sand smooth, confirm the finish level meets your paint plan, and clean up. What you get is a wall that's ready for interior paint or tile.

When to call a pro instead of doing it yourself

01

Ceilings

Hanging drywall overhead requires at least two people and the right lift equipment. A solo DIY ceiling job almost always ends with a cracked sheet or a bad seam.

02

Finishing to paint-grade

Getting seams to disappear under paint takes practice. Level 4 and 5 finishes are not something you pick up the first time. If you can see the seam, the job isn't done.

03

Fire-rated assemblies

Garages, basement utility rooms, and walls adjacent to furnaces often require 5/8-inch Type X board with specific fastener spacing. This isn't optional if your home goes on the market.

04

Large open areas

An open basement, great room addition, or studio buildout has a lot of linear footage of seams. More seams means more mud, more coats, more sanding. Scale matters.

Drywall work alongside other jobs

ceilings work, professional service in Schaumburg, IL
A lot of drywall work comes in the middle of something bigger. A kitchen remodel almost always involves patching around new plumbing or a relocated appliance. A bathroom renovation means cutting in for a new fan or recessed fixture and finishing the wall back out. We handle that work as part of the broader project, not as a separate call to a separate contractor. That's been the practical advantage of working with a crew that does general remodeling from start to finish. You don't coordinate between two companies, because it's the same people the whole way through. The Local Handyman LLC has run that kind of job across the northwest suburbs since 2016, and it's honestly the way this work should be done.

We had a great experience with this handyman. He was professional, punctual, and clearly knew what he was doing. The work was completed carefully and efficiently, and he made sure everything was clean when finished. He communicated well throughout the job and charged a fair price. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for reliable home repairs or improvements.

Common questions about drywall installation

How much does drywall installation cost?
It depends on the scope, the finish level, and what's already in place. A single room is a different number than a basement buildout or a whole-floor addition. Sheet thickness, ceiling height, and how many cuts the layout requires all move the number. We don't quote from a rate sheet. Every job is different, contact The Local Handyman LLC for an accurate estimate.
What's the difference between a level 3 and a level 5 finish?
Level 3 leaves a thin skim over tape and fasteners, which is fine under heavy texture. Level 4 adds another coat and is appropriate for flat or eggshell paint in most rooms. Level 5 adds a final skim coat over the entire surface, and it's what you need if you're painting with a gloss or semi-gloss finish in a room with strong sidelighting. Most residential rooms are level 4.
How long does drywall mud need to dry between coats?
Standard joint compound needs at least 24 hours per coat under normal conditions, longer in a cold basement or a room with no air movement. Rushing the dry time is the most common reason seams crack or bubble later. We don't sand wet mud. It's one of those things you can't shortcut without paying for it twice.
Do I need a permit for drywall installation in Illinois?
For replacing existing drywall, typically no. For adding new walls that change the floor plan, enclosing a basement, or framing a new room, many municipalities require a permit. It depends on the scope and your specific village or city code. We're not the permit authority, so check with your local building department before the job starts.
Can drywall installation be done in a basement with moisture issues?
Standard drywall is not the right choice for a basement that has any history of water intrusion. Moisture-resistant board is available, but even that has limits. If the basement has ever taken on water, the moisture issue needs to be resolved before any drywall goes up. Installing over an active problem just hides it until you've got mold behind a finished wall.
What's the difference between a level 3 and a level 5 drywall finish?
Level 3 leaves a thin skim over tape and fasteners, which works under heavy texture. Level 4 adds another coat and suits flat or eggshell paint in most rooms. Level 5 adds a final skim coat over the entire surface, needed for gloss or semi-gloss finishes in rooms with strong sidelighting. Most residential rooms land at level 4.
How long does joint compound need to dry between coats?
At least 24 hours per coat under normal conditions, longer in a cold basement or a closed room. Rushing the dry time is the most common cause of cracking and bubbling later. Wet mud cannot be sanded properly. It's one of those things that can't be shortcut without paying for the fix twice.
Is moisture-resistant drywall required in a bathroom?
In wet areas like around a shower or tub surround, standard drywall fails quickly. Cement board or moisture-resistant gypsum is the right substrate behind tile. Greenboard (moisture-resistant paper-faced drywall) works on non-wet bathroom walls but shouldn't be used directly behind tile. The wrong board in the wrong location is a mold problem waiting to happen.
Can drywall installation be done as part of a larger remodel?
Yes, and that's actually the most efficient way to handle it. If you're moving a wall, finishing a basement, or doing a kitchen or bathroom remodel, drywall is part of the sequence, not a separate trade call. The Local Handyman LLC handles the full scope, so you're not coordinating between two different contractors on the same job.
