What Goes Into Painting Indoors Properly

Painting indoors sounds simple until you're three hours in with roller marks on the ceiling, paint on the trim, and a color that looked nothing like the swatch. The Local Handyman LLC has been painting homes across the northwest Chicago suburbs since 2016, and the difference between a paint job that lasts and one you'll want to redo in two years usually comes down to prep. We don't skip it. If you want the work done without the frustration, call (773) 444-7153.

Good interior painting starts before a drop of color goes on the wall. Surfaces need to be cleaned, sanded where needed, and primed correctly, especially on new drywall repair patches or previously unpainted surfaces. The type of paint matters too: flat hides imperfections on ceilings, eggshell and satin hold up better in kitchens and bathrooms, and semi-gloss belongs on trim and doors. Cost varies depending on room size, ceiling height, the number of coats required, and the condition of existing walls. A single room is a very different job than painting through an entire floor during a kitchen remodeling or full remodeling project. Every job is different, contact The Local Handyman LLC for an accurate estimate.

Why Prep Work Separates Good Paint Jobs From Bad Ones

flat or matte work, professional service in Schaumburg, IL
Most paint failures aren't a paint problem. They're a prep problem. We fill nail holes, sand rough patches, tape trim and outlets, and lay down drop cloths before the first brush stroke. If there's old paint peeling or a wall that had water damage, we fix that too. You can't paint over a problem and expect it to disappear. Walls that haven't been touched in years sometimes need a full prime coat before the finish color. We'll tell you straight what the wall actually needs, not what adds the most to a bill. We won't recommend a full room repaint when spot-touching three scuffed areas is the honest answer.

What's Included

Interior Painting Services We Handle

  1. 01

    Surface Prep and Priming

Filling holes, sanding, cleaning walls, and applying primer where the surface calls for it, especially over drywall repair patches or bare wood.

  2. 02

    Trim, Ceiling, and Wall Painting

Clean lines between surfaces. We tape and cut in by hand rather than masking everything, faster and sharper results on most residential jobs.

  3. 03

    Multi-Room and Full-Floor Projects

Coordinating color across rooms, matching existing paint, and keeping the rest of the house protected while work is in progress.

  4. 04

    Painting During Renovations

Timing paint work correctly inside a larger remodeling job so new trim, cabinetry, or flooring installation doesn't get damaged afterward.

Choosing the Right Paint for Each Room

Not every room gets the same finish. Here's the short version of what actually holds up.

01

Flat or Matte

Best for ceilings and low-traffic bedroom walls. Hides surface imperfections well but doesn't wipe clean easily, not the right call near kids or in hallways.

02

Eggshell and Satin

The workhorses of interior painting. They hold up to cleaning, look good in natural light, and work across living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas.

03

Semi-Gloss

Trim, doors, and window frames. Durable, moisture-resistant, and it highlights the detail in trim work that flat paint would just swallow.

04

Kitchen and Bathroom Walls

Humidity and grease call for at least a satin finish. Some contractors skip this detail and use whatever's left. We don't.

How It Works

How We Run an Interior Painting Job

Three steps, no surprises.

  1. 01

    Walk-Through and Plan

We look at the rooms, the current wall condition, and what you're trying to accomplish. You'll know what prep is needed, what paint type we recommend, and how long the job will take.

  2. 02

    Prep, Prime, and Paint

Furniture moved or covered, floors protected, holes filled, surfaces primed where needed. Then the actual painting, walls, ceilings, trim in the right order so nothing gets double-coated by accident.

  3. 03

    Clean Up and Walk-Through

Drop cloths pulled, tape removed, touch-ups done. We walk the rooms with you before we leave. If something doesn't look right, we fix it on the spot.

Common Interior Painting Questions

What type of paint finish should I use on interior walls?
It depends on the room. Eggshell or satin works for most living spaces. They're washable and hold up without looking too glossy. Semi-gloss belongs on trim and doors. Flat is fine for ceilings. Bathrooms and kitchens need at least a satin finish to handle moisture without peeling.
How many coats does an interior paint job typically need?
Most walls need two coats of finish color for even, opaque coverage. Going from a dark color to a light one can require three. Skipping to one coat almost always shows. You'll see roller texture and uneven sheen, especially in raking light. We don't cut that corner.
Do I need to prime before painting interior walls?
Not always, but more often than people think. New drywall, patched spots, stain-prone surfaces, and dramatic color changes all need primer. Skipping it on bare drywall means the finish coat soaks in unevenly and looks blotchy. We assess each surface and prime where the wall actually needs it.
How long does it take to paint the inside of a house?
A single room with standard 8-foot ceilings usually takes a full day including prep and two coats. A full floor of four or five rooms runs two to three days. Older homes with more trim detail, high ceilings, or walls that need significant prep will take longer. We give you a realistic timeline before we start.
Can you paint over existing paint without stripping it?
Yes, in most cases. If the existing paint is adhering well, cleaning and light sanding is enough prep. If it's peeling, flaking, or the surface has moisture damage, that needs to be addressed first or the new coat will fail the same way. We check before we paint, not after.
What's the ventilation requirement for painting indoors?
Modern latex paints have low VOCs and are safe with normal room ventilation, open windows and a fan are usually enough. Oil-based paints and some primers need stronger airflow and drying time between coats. We'll tell you what to expect and how long before the room is comfortable to use again.
