Flooring installation that holds up

Flooring installation is one of those jobs where the prep work matters more than most people realize. A floor that looks great on day one but shifts, squeaks, or gaps within a year is almost always a subfloor problem nobody dealt with upfront. The Local Handyman LLC has been installing, replacing, and refinishing floors across the northwest Chicago suburbs since 2016, and we don't skip that step. If you've been getting quotes and wondering why they vary so much, the answer usually comes down to what's underneath. Call (773) 444-7153 and we'll tell you straight what your floor actually needs.

What drives cost on a flooring job: square footage, material choice, subfloor condition, and whether existing flooring needs to come out first. Luxury vinyl plank runs cheaper to install than solid hardwood. A concrete slab needs a different approach than a wood subfloor. A room with existing tile that has to be demolished adds time and labor before the new floor even touches the ground. We handle all of it, from tear-out through final trim. Every job is different, contact The Local Handyman LLC for an accurate estimate.

What We Install

Flooring types we work with

Different floors call for different approaches. We've worked with all of them.

01

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

The most popular choice in northwest suburb homes right now, and for good reason. It handles moisture better than hardwood, it's forgiving over slightly uneven subfloors, and it clicks together cleanly. We install floating and glue-down LVP in kitchens, basements, and main living areas.

02

Hardwood & Engineered Hardwood

Solid hardwood adds real value to a home. Engineered hardwood gives you the look with better dimensional stability across seasons. Both require careful acclimation before installation. A step some crews skip. We don't.

03

Tile Flooring

Porcelain, ceramic, natural stone. Tile floors in kitchens and bathrooms need a solid substrate and proper layout planning before the first piece goes down. We do the same tile installation work on floors that we do on walls and backsplashes.

04

Flooring Repair & Refinishing

Not every floor needs to come out. Squeaky boards, damaged planks, worn finish on hardwood. These are often fixable without a full replacement. We'll tell you honestly whether a repair makes sense or whether replacement is the smarter call long-term.

Our Process

How a flooring job actually goes

  1. 01

    Assess and prep

We look at the subfloor first. Any soft spots, moisture issues, or height transitions get addressed before any new material goes down. Skipping this is why floors fail early.

  2. 02

    Remove and install

Old flooring comes out cleanly. New material goes in with the right method for the product type, floating, nail-down, glue-down, or mortar-set for tile.

  3. 03

    Trim and finish

Baseboards, transitions, and thresholds close out the job. We handle the trim work so the floor looks complete, not like someone stopped halfway.

The honest version

What we won't do on a flooring job

luxury vinyl plank lvp work, professional service in Schaumburg, IL
We won't install new flooring over a subfloor that isn't ready for it. Some crews will lay LVP over a soft or wet subfloor because it's faster, and it looks fine for about eight months. Then the floor starts to buckle or separate at the seams, and the homeowner is left calling someone else to rip it all out and start over. That's the cheap option costing more. We're not going to do that to you. If the subfloor needs work first, we'll tell you, show you, and fix it before anything else goes down. We've been doing this across the northwest suburbs since 2016, and we'd rather spend an extra hour on prep than have you call back unhappy. Check our project photos on Google, 50 of them, if you want to see what finished work looks like.

Flooring pairs well with other work

  1. 01

    Kitchen remodeling

New floors and a kitchen remodel often happen at the same time. It's easier to run flooring before cabinets go in, and it makes the whole space feel new.

  2. 02

    Trim and baseboard work

A new floor looks unfinished without updated trim. We handle custom carpentry and baseboard installation as part of the same visit when it makes sense.

  3. 03

    Drywall and wall repairs

Moving flooring into a room sometimes means patching walls or addressing damage that's been hidden. Our crew handles drywall installation and repairs so you're not coordinating three separate contractors.

Flooring installation questions

Do flooring installers remove baseboards?
It depends on the installation method and the floor height change. For floating LVP, we typically remove baseboards, install the floor, and reinstall or replace the trim. For tile, the approach varies by job. We'll walk you through what's needed for your specific situation before we start, no surprises mid-job.
What is the average cost to get flooring installed?
Flooring installation costs vary significantly based on material, square footage, subfloor condition, and whether old flooring needs to come out first. LVP and laminate generally run lower than hardwood or large-format tile. A small bedroom is a very different scope than an open-concept main floor. Every job is different, contact The Local Handyman LLC for an accurate estimate.
How much does it cost to floor 1,000 square feet?
At 1,000 square feet, material choice becomes the biggest variable. LVP costs less per square foot than solid hardwood or natural stone tile. Subfloor prep, furniture moving, and disposal of old flooring all add to the total. We'd rather give you a real number after seeing the space than a guess that ends up wrong. Every job is different, contact The Local Handyman LLC for an accurate estimate.
Does LVP flooring need to acclimate before installation?
Yes, and skipping acclimation is one of the most common reasons LVP expands or gaps after installation. Most manufacturers recommend 48 hours in the room where it'll be installed. We factor that into scheduling so the product is ready when we are.
Can new flooring be installed over existing tile or hardwood?
Sometimes. LVP can often go over existing hard flooring if it's level, well-bonded, and not adding too much height at transitions. Tile over tile is more situational. Old hardwood being refinished rather than replaced is a different question entirely. We assess each job individually and tell you what will actually work long-term.
How do I know if my subfloor needs repairs before new flooring goes in?
Soft spots when you walk, squeaks that bounce in multiple directions, visible moisture staining, or height variation across the floor are all signs the subfloor needs attention. We check for these before any new material gets ordered. A subfloor fix upfront costs far less than removing and reinstalling a finished floor six months later.
