What Custom Carpentry Actually Covers
A custom carpenter builds things that fit your specific home rather than pulling something off a shelf and hoping it's close enough. That's the short answer. The Local Handyman LLC has been doing exactly that across the northwest Chicago suburbs since 2016, cabinetry, built-ins, trim details, custom shelving, stair railings, and finish work that matches the character of your house rather than fighting it. If you've got a project that needs real measuring and real craftsmanship, call us at (773) 444-7153.
What drives the cost of a carpentry job? Mostly three things: the complexity of the design, the materials you choose, and how much existing work has to be worked around. A set of straightforward floating shelves is a different job than a wall of floor-to-ceiling built-ins with face frames and integrated lighting. Material matters too, solid wood, MDF, plywood, hardwood veneer, and paint-grade stock each behave differently and price accordingly. We'll walk through all of it with you before a single cut gets made. Every job is different, contact The Local Handyman LLC for an accurate estimate.
Carpentry Work We Handle
From a single built-in shelf to a full set of kitchen cabinets, this is the kind of work we do every week.
Custom Cabinetry
Kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, mudroom storage, laundry rooms. We build and install cabinetry that fits the actual dimensions of your space rather than trimmed-out stock boxes. If you're planning a kitchen remodeling project, cabinetry is usually the centerpiece of the whole job.
Built-In Shelving and Storage
Bookcases, entertainment centers, window seats with storage underneath, closet systems. Built-ins add usable space without eating square footage, and they look like the house was designed that way from the start. That's the whole point.
Trim and Finish Carpentry
Crown molding, baseboards, door casings, window trim, wainscoting, and coffered ceilings. Trim work is what separates a finished renovation from a space that still looks like a construction site. We take it seriously.
Stair Railings and Spindles
Replacing worn or outdated spindles, installing new newel posts, rebuilding railings that have gotten loose over the years. Stair work requires patience and precision, an off measurement shows every time someone walks past it.
Custom Shelving and Storage Units
Pantry shelves, garage storage, utility rooms, workshop benches. Not everything needs to be furniture-grade, but everything we build needs to hold what you're putting on it without sagging in six months.
Doors and Door Framing
Interior door installation, frame repairs, pocket doors, barn door hardware. Doors that don't hang square or latch right are a constant irritation. We get them right the first time and move on.
Our Process
How a Carpentry Job Gets Done
- 01
Measure and Plan
We come out, measure the space exactly, and talk through your goals. If there are structural or layout constraints, we find out now rather than mid-project. You'll know what's getting built before we pick up a tool.
- 02
Build and Fit
Most custom pieces are built to the measured dimensions, then fitted and adjusted on-site. No home is perfectly square or level. Good carpentry accounts for that from the start rather than forcing a perfect box into an imperfect wall.
- 03
Finish and Clean Up
Sanding, caulking, priming, and final fitting. We leave the space clean. You shouldn't have to vacuum sawdust for two days after we leave, and with us, you won't.
What Separates Good Carpentry From Mediocre Work
Good to Know
When Carpentry Connects to Other Work
Most carpentry projects touch at least one other trade. Here's what we can handle in the same visit or project.
- 01
Drywall patching around new built-ins
Installing a built-in almost always means cutting into or repairing drywall. We handle drywall installation work so you're not calling a second contractor after the carpentry is done.
- 02
Tiling around new cabinetry
Kitchen backsplashes and bathroom tile work often need to be done after cabinets are set. We do tiling work as part of the same project so everything lines up the way it should.
- 03
Plumbing reconnection after cabinet work
Pull out old kitchen cabinets and you'll need the sink re-plumbed to fit the new layout. We handle plumbing repairs so the project doesn't stall waiting on a second trade.
- 04
Custom work as part of a full remodel
If you're taking on a full kitchen remodeling project or a room renovation, carpentry is usually the backbone of the whole job. We can scope it as part of the larger project rather than quoting it separately.
