Tile Work That Holds Up

Tiling looks simple until you've watched a job done wrong, uneven grout lines, tiles that crack six months later, corners that don't align. The most common tiling mistakes aren't about the tile itself. They're about the prep: a substrate that isn't flat, adhesive that wasn't given enough cure time, grout that was sealed too soon. The Local Handyman LLC has been setting tile in kitchens, bathrooms, and throughout homes across the northwest suburbs since 2016, and that experience is exactly what keeps jobs from failing. If you're ready to get the work done right the first time, call us at (773) 444-7153.

What drives cost on a tile job? Size of the space is the obvious factor, but it's not the only one. Existing substrate condition matters a lot, a floor that needs leveling or a wall that needs backer board adds time and material before a single tile goes down. The type of tile you choose changes the cutting complexity. Larger-format tiles look sharp but demand flatter surfaces and slower installation. Intricate patterns or diagonal layouts take longer than straight runs. Every job is different, contact The Local Handyman LLC for an accurate estimate.

Where We Install and Replace Tile

From a single cracked floor tile to a full bathroom renovation, we cover the whole scope.

01

Kitchen Backsplashes

Subway tile, mosaic, large-format porcelain, we cut clean, set level, and grout tight. A backsplash is one of the fastest ways to change how a kitchen looks, and we do them as part of full kitchen remodeling projects or as a standalone job.

02

Bathroom Floors and Walls

Bathroom tile takes moisture, foot traffic, and daily cleaning. We use appropriate backer board and waterproofing where the job calls for it, especially in wet areas. This is one of the spots where cutting corners early leads to a failure you won't notice until water has already done damage.

03

Shower Walls and Floors

Shower tiling is the most technical work in the room. Slope, waterproofing, and grout selection all matter more here than anywhere else. We've done full shower builds as part of bathroom remodeling work and as standalone re-tiles when an old shower just needs to be redone.

04

Floor Tile Throughout the Home

Entryways, laundry rooms, kitchens, mudrooms, tile floors hold up better than most surfaces under heavy use. We install and replace floor tile in all these spaces. If you're comparing options, we also do flooring replacement in other materials when tile isn't the right call.

05

Tile Replacement and Repair

One cracked tile or a section where grout has failed doesn't mean you need to redo the whole floor. We can replace individual tiles and regrout sections where the existing tile is still sound. The hard part is matching. We'll tell you upfront if a match is possible or if a partial repair will look worse than starting fresh.

Common Mistakes

Tiling Errors That Cost You Later

Most tile failures trace back to one of these, and all of them are avoidable.

  1. 01

    Skipping substrate prep

Tile is only as stable as what it's bonded to. A floor that flexes or a wall that isn't flat will crack grout lines and eventually pop tiles. We assess the substrate first, every time.

  2. 02

Using the wrong mortar or adhesive

Not all thinset is the same. Large-format tiles, glass tiles, and natural stone each need specific products. Using a general-purpose thinset on a 24x24 porcelain slab is how you get a hollow-sounding floor that fails in a year.

  3. 03

    Grouting too soon

Mortar needs to fully cure before grout goes in. Rushing it causes movement under the grout while it's setting, which leads to cracking. You won't see it immediately, but you'll see it.

  4. 04

Wrong grout for the joint width

Sanded grout for joints wider than 1/8 inch. Unsanded for narrow joints. Getting this backwards causes grout that crumbles or cracks under normal use. It's a small detail that a lot of DIY jobs get wrong.

Our Process

How a Tile Job Gets Done

  1. 01

    Assess and Prep

We check the substrate for flatness, moisture, and stability. Any leveling, backer board installation, or surface prep happens before tile touches the wall or floor. This step is where the job either gets set up for success or not.

  2. 02

    Set the Tile

Layout lines go down first so the pattern stays true across the whole surface. We cut, set, and level as we go. Tile work isn't fast when it's done properly, rushing the set is one of the main causes of lippage and misalignment.

  3. 03

    Grout, Clean, and Seal

After the mortar cures, we grout, clean excess, and seal where appropriate. We leave the space clean. If we moved anything to get the job done, it goes back.

What to Expect When You Call

floor tile throughout the home work, professional service in Schaumburg, IL
We're available Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm and Saturdays 10am to 5pm. When you call, describe the space and the scope as best you can, size, existing tile condition, what material you're thinking about. That's enough for us to give you a realistic picture of what the job involves before anyone comes out. The Local Handyman LLC handles tile work as a standalone service and as part of larger home improvement projects. If your tile job is part of a bigger renovation, we can coordinate the sequencing so tile goes in at the right point in the project. Not before drywall is done or after a cabinet installation that complicates access. We've been doing this across the northwest suburbs since 2016. Three Google reviews, all five stars. We don't have hundreds. We have homeowners who called, got the job done, and were satisfied enough to say so publicly. Call (773) 444-7153 and let's talk through what you need.

Tiling Questions We Hear Often

What are the most common tiling mistakes to avoid?
The biggest ones: not prepping the substrate flat before setting tile, using the wrong thinset for the tile type, grouting before mortar has fully cured, and picking the wrong grout for the joint width. Any one of these can cause premature failure. None of them are visible until something cracks or pops. Hiring someone who's done enough tile work to know what each substrate needs upfront saves you a redo.
Can you replace just one or two cracked tiles without redoing the whole floor?
Sometimes. If the surrounding tile is stable and we can get a match, a spot repair is completely viable. The hard part is finding matching tile, especially on older floors. If the tile line is discontinued or the finish has faded, a partial repair can end up looking worse than it sounds. We'll tell you honestly before we start whether a match is realistic.
How long does tile installation take?
A standard bathroom floor is typically one to two days, including prep and grout cure time. A full shower tile job runs longer because of the additional waterproofing steps. Kitchen backsplashes vary by linear footage and complexity. The real variable is substrate condition. A floor that needs leveling adds time. We don't rush the cure time between setting and grouting, so build that into your schedule.
What's the difference between ceramic and porcelain tile, and does it matter for installation?
Porcelain is denser than ceramic, which makes it more durable and water-resistant, but also harder to cut. Large-format porcelain slabs require flatter substrates and stronger thinset than standard ceramic. For most bathroom floors and kitchen backsplashes, either works. For shower floors and high-traffic areas, porcelain holds up better long-term. The installation method differs enough that the two shouldn't be treated as interchangeable by whoever's doing the work.
Do you handle the grout repair, or just new tile installation?
Both. Grout that's cracked, crumbling, or discolored can often be repaired or replaced without touching the tile. We remove old grout, regrout, and reseal. In wet areas like showers, failing grout is a water intrusion problem waiting to happen. It's worth addressing before you're dealing with something worse. If you're seeing discoloration or soft spots in grout lines, call sooner rather than later.
Can tile be installed over existing tile?
It can be, under the right conditions. The existing tile needs to be fully bonded, level, and structurally sound. If any tiles are hollow, cracked, or shifting, they have to come up. Adding a tile layer also raises floor height, which affects transitions to adjacent flooring and can create clearance issues with door bottoms. It's worth discussing before assuming it's the easier route.
