How We Install Flooring That Lasts

If you're planning to install flooring, the single biggest cost variable isn't the material. It's what's under it. Subfloor condition, existing moisture issues, and room prep can double the labor on a job that looked straightforward on paper. The Local Handyman LLC has been doing this since 2016 across the northwest suburbs, and we flag those issues before we start, not halfway through. Call (773) 444-7153 and we'll tell you what we're working with.

Flooring jobs range widely depending on square footage, material choice, subfloor prep, and whether there's old flooring to remove first. Vinyl plank, laminate, hardwood, and tile all install differently and carry different labor requirements. A small bathroom tile job is a different day's work than an open-concept main floor in LVP. We also handle flooring replacement when existing material is damaged or needs a full swap. Every job is different, contact The Local Handyman LLC for an accurate estimate.

What's Included

What Flooring Installation Actually Covers

A lot of contractors skip steps. Here's what we don't skip.

  1. 01

    Subfloor Assessment

We check for soft spots, high seams, squeaks, and moisture before anything goes down. Skipping this step is the reason floors fail in year two.

  2. 02

    Old Material Removal

Pulling out carpet, vinyl, or tile adds time and labor. We include removal when it's part of the job scope, no surprise add-ons at the end.

  3. 03

    Underlayment and Prep

Most flooring types need an underlayment layer for sound, moisture, and stability. We don't skip it to save an hour.

  4. 04

    Finish and Transition Strips

Doorways, thresholds, and room transitions matter. A floor without clean transitions looks unfinished and wears unevenly at the edges.

Flooring Types We Install

01

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

The most requested material in the northwest suburbs right now. Waterproof, durable, and easier on the subfloor than hardwood. Works in kitchens, basements, and bathrooms.

02

Laminate

Good laminate installed on a flat, dry subfloor holds up for years. The key word is installed correctly, gaps, buckling, and hollow spots are almost always a prep failure, not a material failure.

03

Hardwood

Solid hardwood requires nailing or stapling to a wood subfloor and needs time to acclimate to your home's humidity. It's not a Saturday project. We do it properly or we tell you why not to.

04

Tile

Tile installation ties directly into our tile work experience. Kitchen and bathroom floors need the right mortar bed and grout joints, not just a quick lay-and-go.

05

Carpet

We handle carpet installation in bedrooms and living spaces. Seam placement matters more than most people realize, a bad seam shows by month three.

Our Process

Three Things That Affect Your Install Cost

  1. 01

    Subfloor Condition

A perfectly flat, dry, solid subfloor keeps labor down. Anything else, low spots, squeaks, water damage, adds time before the first plank goes in.

  2. 02

    Room Layout and Cuts

Open rectangular rooms are faster. Angles, alcoves, stairs, and irregular walls mean more cuts, more waste, and more time. That's not a surprise fee. It's just real labor.

  3. 03

    Material and Underlayment

LVP and laminate tend to run faster than hardwood or tile. The underlayment spec, transition requirements, and whether old flooring needs pulling all factor in.

Good to Know

Quick Facts About Flooring Installation

01

Acclimate your materials first

Hardwood and laminate need 48 to 72 hours sitting in the room where they'll be installed. Skipping this causes buckling. We won't skip it.

02

Most LVP doesn't need glue

Floating LVP clicks together and sits on the subfloor without adhesive in most residential installs. It also lets the floor move naturally with temperature changes.

03

Direction of planks matters

Running planks perpendicular to the main light source makes a room look wider. Running them the long way down a hallway makes it look longer. These decisions happen before install, not during.

Jacob did an incredible job installing a new light fixture for us. He was communicative throughout the process and also took the time to explain some other projects he could help us with around the house. We will definitely be calling him again for our next job. Highly recommend!

We had a great experience with this handyman. He was professional, punctual, and clearly knew what he was doing. The work was completed carefully and efficiently, and he made sure everything was clean when finished. He communicated well throughout the job and charged a fair price. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for reliable home repairs or improvements.

Flooring Installation Questions

How much does it cost to install 1,000 square feet of flooring?
The honest answer: it depends heavily on the material, the subfloor condition, and whether old flooring needs to come out first. LVP tends to install faster than hardwood or tile, which affects labor. Subfloor leveling, stair work, and tight room layouts all add time. Every job is different, contact The Local Handyman LLC for an accurate estimate.
Where should you start laying flooring when installing it?
Start from the longest, straightest wall in the room, typically the wall that runs parallel to the main hallway or entry. This keeps your lines consistent as you work toward the far wall. In open-concept spaces, you usually pick a visual center line. The room's shape and the natural light source both factor into that decision before the first plank goes down.
What is the rule of 3 in flooring?
The rule of 3 refers to staggering your plank end joints so no two joints land within three inches of each other across adjacent rows. It distributes stress and prevents the floor from developing weak seams. It's a basic installation standard, not a premium add-on. If a crew isn't doing this, the floor will show it over time.
How do I know if my subfloor needs repair before new flooring goes in?
Squeaks, soft spots underfoot, visible low points, and any history of water damage are signs the subfloor needs attention before new material goes down. Laying flooring over a compromised subfloor is the fastest route to callbacks. We check it before we commit to a price.
Can flooring be installed over existing flooring?
Sometimes, but not always. A second layer is only viable if the existing floor is fully adhered, level, and doesn't push your door clearances out of spec. In most Chicagoland homes with older construction, we recommend pulling the old material and starting clean. It adds time up front and saves problems later.
How long does flooring installation typically take?
A single bedroom in LVP can be done in a few hours. A full main floor with removal, subfloor prep, and transitions is usually a full day or two. Tile takes longer because of mortar cure time. We won't give you a hard timeline until we've seen the job, but we won't drag it out either.
Can new flooring be installed over existing flooring?
Only if the existing floor is fully adhered, level, and doesn't push door clearances out of spec. In most older Chicagoland homes, pulling the old material and starting clean is the right call. It adds time upfront but prevents bigger problems down the road.
How long does flooring installation take?
A single room in LVP can be done in a few hours. A full main-floor installation with removal and subfloor prep is typically one to two days. Tile takes longer because mortar needs cure time. Timeline depends on scope. We'll tell you what to expect before we start.
