Tile Installation That Holds Up

Tile installation costs vary a lot depending on the size of the space, the tile you choose, and what the surface underneath looks like. What doesn't vary is what separates a good tile job from one you'll be regretting in two years: proper prep, consistent spacing, and grout that's actually sealed. The Local Handyman LLC has been doing tile and remodeling work across Chicagoland since 2016. If you're replacing a cracked bathroom floor, tiling a backsplash, or redoing a shower surround, call (773) 444-7153 and we'll take a look.

The biggest cost drivers on a tile job are substrate condition, tile size and format, and the complexity of the layout. A large-format 24x24 porcelain slab on a perfectly flat floor is a different job than a mosaic herringbone on a wall with two corners and a niche. Both can be done right. Neither can be rushed. Cost for residential tile work ranges widely depending on scope. A small backsplash is a half-day job, a full bathroom floor-to-ceiling is a multi-day project. Every job is different, contact The Local Handyman LLC for an accurate estimate.

What We Do

Tile Work We Handle

From backsplash to bathroom floor, here's what we install.

01

Kitchen Backsplash Tile

Subway tile, mosaic, patterned ceramic, we cut, layout, set, and grout. We work around outlets, switches, and range hoods without leaving gaps or crooked lines.

02

Bathroom Floor Tile

Wet areas need the right underlayment and a waterproof membrane. We don't skip that step. Bathroom floor tile done without it will shift and crack, usually within a year.

03

Shower Walls and Surrounds

Shower tile is the job homeowners most often call us to redo after a bad install. Grout that absorbs water, tile that pops loose, corners that never looked right. We do it once.

04

Floor Tile in Living Areas

Porcelain and ceramic floor tile in entryways, kitchens, and living spaces. Large format or standard. We can tie in to existing flooring or work the tile as its own zone.

05

Tile Replacement

One cracked tile or a full floor that needs to come up. We handle both. Matching existing tile is sometimes possible, sometimes not. We'll tell you honestly what we find.

Our Process

How We Approach a Tile Job

  1. 01

    Surface Prep First

We check the substrate, concrete, backer board, drywall, existing tile, and address any issues before a single tile goes down. Skipping this is why tile fails.

  2. 02

    Layout and Setting

We dry-lay the tile before cutting to confirm the layout works. Cuts happen at edges and in low-visibility spots where possible. Thinset coverage is verified before grouting.

  3. 03

    Grout and Seal

We grout consistently, clean the haze, and seal the grout on any surface exposed to water or high traffic. That last step gets skipped more than it should.

Where Tile Work Connects to a Bigger Project

kitchen backsplash tile work, professional service in Schaumburg, IL
Tile rarely happens in isolation. A kitchen remodeling project often includes a backsplash, and sometimes new floor tile to match. A bathroom renovation usually means tile on the floor, in the shower, and sometimes on the walls. The Local Handyman LLC handles all of it under one contractor relationship, which means the tile gets installed at the right point in the project sequence. After the plumbing rough-in is done, before the fixtures go back in. That sequence matters. When the tile person shows up at the wrong time, something gets damaged or re-done. We've been working through Chicagoland since 2016. Our Google listing has 50 project photos you can browse before you call. If you want to see what our tile work actually looks like, that's the place to start.

Jacob did an incredible job installing a new light fixture for us. He was communicative throughout the process and also took the time to explain some other projects he could help us with around the house. We will definitely be calling him again for our next job. Highly recommend!

We had a great experience with this handyman. He was professional, punctual, and clearly knew what he was doing. The work was completed carefully and efficiently, and he made sure everything was clean when finished. He communicated well throughout the job and charged a fair price. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for reliable home repairs or improvements.

Tile Installation: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does tile installation cost for a bathroom floor?
Cost depends on square footage, tile format, and substrate condition. A small bathroom floor in decent shape is a different scope than a large floor with water-damaged subfloor that needs to come out first. We don't publish flat rates because the job varies too much. Every job is different, contact The Local Handyman LLC for an accurate estimate.
What type of tile works best in a shower?
Porcelain with a low water absorption rate (less than 0.5%) is the standard recommendation for wet areas. Larger tiles mean fewer grout lines, which means fewer places for moisture to work in. Textured or matte finishes on floor tile reduce slip risk. Glossy tile on shower floors looks great in photos and is a hazard in real life. We'll give you our honest read on what you're considering.
Does the existing tile need to come out before new tile goes in?
Not always. Tile-on-tile is possible if the existing surface is flat, firmly bonded, and the added height won't create a problem at transitions and doors. When the old tile is loose, cracked, or over a damaged substrate, it has to come out. We check the existing surface first and tell you what we're looking at before anything gets demoed.
What causes grout to crack or discolor within the first year?
Usually one of three things: movement in the substrate that wasn't addressed before tiling, grout joints that were too narrow for the tile format used, or grout that was never sealed on a surface exposed to water or foot traffic. All three are preventable. If you've had a previous tile job fail early, those are the places to look.
How long does tile installation take to complete?
A kitchen backsplash is typically a one-day job. A bathroom floor can run one to two days depending on prep. A full bathroom floor-to-ceiling with a custom shower surround is a multi-day project. Thinset needs cure time before grouting, and grout needs time before the space gets wet. We don't rush that part. Rushing it is how tile fails.
Can you match existing tile for a repair or partial replacement?
Sometimes, sometimes not. If the tile is a standard format still in production, we can usually source a match. Discontinued tile is harder. We'll tell you upfront whether a match is realistic so you can decide whether to do a partial repair or replace the whole field. We won't install something that looks wrong and call it close enough.
