Interior painting that actually holds up

A lot of homeowners ask how much it costs to paint a room before they ask anything else. That's fair. But the number that matters most isn't the upfront price. It's whether the paint looks good in two years and whether the crew left your furniture covered and your floors clean. The Local Handyman LLC has been doing interior painting across the northwest suburbs since 2016. We prep right, we cut clean, and we don't leave until the job looks like it should. Call (773) 444-7153 to talk through your project.

What drives cost on an interior painting job comes down to a handful of things: room count, ceiling height, the condition of the walls going in, and the finish you're after. A single bedroom with good drywall is a different scope than a two-story open foyer with patched walls and trim that hasn't been touched in 15 years. We handle both, and everything between. Prep is where most painting jobs go wrong. Skipping it saves time on day one and shows up as peeling, bleed-through, or rough texture within a season. We don't skip it. Every job is different, contact The Local Handyman LLC for an accurate estimate.

THE WORK

What good interior painting actually looks like

Prep takes longer than the painting itself. That's not an excuse. It's the job.

We start by protecting what isn't being painted. Floors get covered, furniture gets moved or draped, outlets get masked. Then we look at the walls. Holes get patched, cracks get filled, rough spots get sanded down before primer goes anywhere near them. If there's old paint that's peeling or flaking, that comes off first. Cutting in is done by hand, no tape-and-spray shortcut on surfaces where the line actually matters. Two coats is standard. If the color change is dramatic or the wall surface is inconsistent, sometimes three is right. We don't talk you into more than the wall needs. Our painting services cover both interior and exterior painting if you're tackling the full house.

HOW IT WORKS

How we run an interior painting project

Three steps, no surprises.

  1. 01

    Talk through the scope

You describe the rooms, the colors, and what condition the walls are in. We tell you honestly what prep is needed and what to expect. No inflated estimates to cover surprises we haven't seen yet.

  2. 02

    Prep, prime, paint

We protect the space, patch and sand what needs it, prime where required, and paint in the sequence that gets the cleanest result. Trim and ceilings go in the right order. Not whatever's fastest.

  3. 03

Walk it with you before we leave

When the job's done, we walk every room with you. If something doesn't look right, we address it on the spot. We don't ask you to call back in a week to fix what we should have caught ourselves.

Why prep separates a lasting paint job from one that fails

interior painting work, professional service in Schaumburg, IL
Honestly, most painting problems aren't paint problems. They're prep problems. Paint applied over a dusty, unprimed, or uneven surface looks fine for a few months, then it starts showing every flaw in the wall behind it, or it peels at the edges where adhesion was never there to begin with. We've repainted plenty of rooms that another crew painted a year before. The pattern is almost always the same: they moved fast through prep and it caught up with them. We're not going to spend three hours on a wall that only needs one, but we're also not going to rush past the part that determines whether the job holds. For rooms that are part of a larger project, say, a kitchen remodel or a bathroom refresh, painting is usually the last step, and it has to land right because it's what the whole project looks like when it's finished.

Jacob did an incredible job installing a new light fixture for us. He was communicative throughout the process and also took the time to explain some other projects he could help us with around the house. We will definitely be calling him again for our next job. Highly recommend!

We had a great experience with this handyman. He was professional, punctual, and clearly knew what he was doing. The work was completed carefully and efficiently, and he made sure everything was clean when finished. He communicated well throughout the job and charged a fair price. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for reliable home repairs or improvements.

Questions about interior painting

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a 2,000 square foot house?
It depends heavily on ceiling height, wall condition, number of colors, and whether trim and ceilings are included. A house with straightforward walls and a single color runs very differently than one with vaulted ceilings, heavy patching needs, and detailed trim work. There's no honest flat number we can give without knowing the scope. Every job is different, contact The Local Handyman LLC at (773) 444-7153 for an accurate estimate.
How many coats of paint does a typical interior room need?
Two coats is the baseline for a proper finish. If you're making a significant color change, dark to light, or saturated to white, two coats often won't fully cover and a third is the honest answer. Skipping to one coat to save time is how you end up with uneven sheen and bleed-through in six months. We tell you upfront what the walls need, not what's fastest.
Do I need to prime before painting interior walls?
Not always, but more often than most crews admit. New drywall requires primer, paint alone won't bond correctly and you'll see flashing and uneven absorption. Patched spots need spot priming at minimum, or they'll show through the finish coat. Going from a dark color to a light one usually needs a full primer coat too. We assess the walls before we start and prime where it actually matters.
What type of paint finish is right for interior walls?
Flat and matte finishes hide imperfections well but don't clean easily. They work for ceilings and low-traffic rooms. Eggshell is the most common choice for living areas because it balances a clean look with enough durability to wipe down. Satin holds up better in kitchens and bathrooms where moisture and grease are factors. We'll tell you what's practical for each room, not just what looks good in the can.
How long does interior painting take to dry between coats?
Most interior latex paints are dry to the touch in one to two hours, but you shouldn't apply a second coat until the first has had at least four hours, and in humid conditions or thick applications, longer is better. Rushing the recoat window is one of the most common causes of peeling and poor adhesion. We don't cut the drying time short just to finish faster.
Can you paint over existing wallpaper instead of removing it?
We don't recommend it, and we won't do it without telling you exactly why it's a risk. Painting over wallpaper traps moisture, causes seams to bubble, and can pull away from the wall over time. Removal is almost always the better call, it costs more upfront but produces a paint job that actually lasts. If removal isn't an option, we'll tell you that too, and explain what you're getting into.
Do interior walls need primer before painting?
Not always, but more often than most crews will admit. New drywall requires primer, paint alone won't bond correctly. Patched spots need spot priming at minimum or they'll show through the finish coat. Going from dark to light usually warrants a full primer coat. We assess the walls first and prime where it actually matters.
What paint finish works best for interior living areas?
Eggshell is the most common choice for living rooms and bedrooms, it balances a clean appearance with enough durability to wipe down. Flat works for ceilings and low-traffic rooms. Satin holds up better in kitchens and bathrooms where moisture is a factor. We'll recommend the practical finish for each room, not just the one that looks best in the store.
How long should I wait between coats of interior paint?
Most interior latex paints are touch-dry in one to two hours, but recoating before four hours risks poor adhesion and peeling. In humid conditions or with thick application, waiting longer is the right call. We don't rush the drying window just to finish the job faster.
Can you paint over wallpaper instead of removing it?
We don't recommend it. Painting over wallpaper traps moisture, causes seams to bubble, and can pull away from the wall over time. Removal costs more upfront but produces a paint job that holds. If removal genuinely isn't possible, we'll explain the risks clearly before touching a brush.
What prep work is included before you start painting?
We protect floors and furniture, patch holes and cracks, sand rough spots, mask trim and outlets, and prime where the wall condition or color change demands it. Prep is where most paint jobs fail. We don't treat it as optional or rush through it to save time on the front end.
